Why the dog cooperates

Nothing about it is done to him

A clipper is something that happens to a dog while somebody holds his leg. A board is something he walks up to on his own. That is the whole difference, and it is why dogs who scream at clippers will file their own nails without being asked twice.

“He files his own nails now. I just top up the peanut butter.”
Marta K. - Border Collie
Nothing about it is done to him

Why it keeps working

The sheet is the wear part, not the board

The grit slides out of the frame and a fresh one slides back in, no tools and no glue. You will feel the surface go smooth under your thumb before you can see it. For one medium dog that is a few months of use per sheet.

The sheet is the wear part, not the board

Why the angle matters

Set it to the paw, not the other way round

The wooden frame notches through several positions, so a dachshund and a shepherd both get a surface they can reach without stretching. When you are done it folds flat and stands in a corner.

Grit sheets are the only thing you ever buy again, and one lasts a medium dog a few months.

Three steps

There is no learning curve

1
Bait the top edge

Bait the top edge

Peanut butter, paste, whatever they will actually work for. That is the entire training method.
2
Let the front paws do it

Let the front paws do it

Set the frame to an angle they can reach comfortably and stand back. Two short sessions a week is enough.
3
Swap the sheet when it dulls

Before you ask

Questions we actually get

My dog has never seen one of these. Will he use it?

Almost always, but not on day one. Put something he likes along the top edge and let him find it himself. Do not push his paw onto the board, that teaches him the board is something that happens to him. Two or three short sessions is the normal learning curve.

Does it actually replace clippers?

For most dogs, yes, as long as you keep it up. Filing takes the tip down gradually instead of cutting it, so you cannot hit the quick. If the nails are already badly overgrown, get them cut back once and then use the board to hold them there.

Does it do back nails too?

No. It is a front-paw tool. Back nails usually wear down more on their own from walking, but if yours do not, this board will not fix that on its own.

How often do I replace the grit sheet?

For one medium dog, a few months. You will feel it go smooth under your thumb before you see it. The sheet slides out and a new one slides in, no tools. The five and ten sheet bundles are there so you are not ordering again in three months.

Will it scratch my floor?

The frame is wood and sits flat. It is the paw moving on the grit, not the board moving on the floor. On tile or laminate put a mat under it if your dog is enthusiastic.

What if it does not work for us?
